Aclop® contains the active substance clopidogrel.

Aclop® belongs to a group of medicines called platelet function inhibitors. Platelets are very small blood cells, smaller than red or white blood cells, that clump together during the formation of a blood clot. Platelet function inhibitors prevent this clumping together and in this way reduce the risk of blood clots forming (a process called thrombosis).

Aclop® is taken by adults to prevent the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in ‘calcified’ blood vessels (arteries), a process called atherothrombosis, which can lead to atherothrombotic events such as stroke, heart attack or death.

Aclop® may be prescribed to prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of these serious events occurring for the following reasons:

  • If you have calcified arteries (known as atherosclerosis), and
  • If you have had a heart attack, stroke or a condition known as peripheral arterial disease; or
  • If you have had an episode of severe chest pain known as “unstable angina” or a heart attack. To treat this, your doctor may have placed a stent in the blocked or narrowed artery to restore blood flow.

You should also have been prescribed acetylsalicylic acid (an active ingredient found in many medicines both as a painkiller and fever reducer and to prevent blood clots) by your doctor.

  • You have an irregular heartbeat, a condition called “atrial fibrillation”, and cannot take medicines called “oral anticoagulants” (vitamin K antagonists), which prevent new blood clots from forming and existing blood clots from growing. You should have been told that “oral anticoagulants” are more effective than acetylsalicylic acid or a combination of acetylsalicylic acid and clopidogrel for this condition. Your doctor should have prescribed clopidogrel plus acetylsalicylic acid if you cannot take “oral anticoagulants” and are not at risk of severe bleeding.
