Grasustek® contains the active ingredient pegfilgrastim.
Pegfilgrastim is a protein that is produced biotechnologically in bacteria called E. coli. It belongs to a group of proteins called cytokines and is very similar to a natural protein (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor) produced by the body.
Grasustek® is given to adults who are at least 18 years old.
Grasustek® is used to shorten the duration of neutropenia (low white blood cell count) and to reduce the occurrence of neutropenic fever (low white blood cell count associated with fever). These can be caused by the use of cytotoxic chemotherapy (drugs that destroy fast-growing cells). White blood cells are important because they help your body fight infections. These cells are very sensitive to the effects of chemotherapy. This can cause the number of white blood cells in your body to decrease. If the white blood cell count drops to a low level, the body may not have enough of these cells to fight bacteria and you may be at increased risk of infection.
