Melkart®

Melkart®

The active substance of Melkart® is vildagliptin, a member of a class of medicinal products called oral antidiabetics.

Vildagliptin is used to treat adult patients with type 2 diabetes. It is used when the disease cannot be adequately controlled through diet and physical exercise alone and aids in regulating the glucose level in the blood. The doctor prescribes Melkart® either alone or as an add-on to other antidiabetics already taken, if these do not provide sufficient control of diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes develops when the body does not produce sufficient insulin or when the insulin produced by the body does not have an adequate effect as it should. Type 2 diabetes can arise even if the body produces too much glucagon.

Insulin is a substance that effects the reduction of blood glucose concentration, especially after meals. Glucagon triggers the production of glucose in the liver and therefore causes an increase in the blood glucose level. Both of these substances are produced in the pancreas.

The effect of Melkart® is based on the fact that it causes the pancreas to produce more insulin and less glucagon. This allows better regulation of the blood glucose level. It has been shown that this medicinal product reduces blood glucose, which may help prevent the complications of diabetes. Even when patients begin to take a medicinal product for diabetes, it is important to continue the recommended diet and/or exercise program.
